Cash is one smaller payment. The annuity pays the full jackpot yearly: 30 years for Powerball, Mega Millions, Tri-State Megabucks and Lotto America.

    Graduated state tax

For 2026, Maine taxes a single filer's taxable income at 5.8% on the first $27,400, 6.75% up to $64,850 and 7.15% above that, or on a joint return up to $54,850 and $129,750. Winnings are added to the rest of your income.

Surcharge on income over $1 million

From 2026, Maine adds a 2% surcharge on taxable income over $1 million for a single filer, $1.5 million on a joint return or for a head of household, and $750,000 for a married person filing separately, so the part of a large prize above that is taxed at 9.15%. The thresholds rise with inflation from 2027.

Prizes on Maine State Lottery tickets bought in Maine are Maine income, so winners who live in another state owe Maine income tax on them too.
