More Claim Rules
- Sign your ticket
- A Nebraska Lottery ticket belongs to whoever holds it until it's signed, so sign the back of a winning ticket and fill in your name and address right away.
- Cashing a ticket
- Draw game tickets can't be cashed until 5 a.m. Central time on the day after the drawing.
- Debts owed to the state
- Before paying a prize of more than $500, the lottery checks for back taxes and child support owed, and pays them out of the prize first.
- Your name
- Winners of $250,000 or more stay anonymous unless they agree in writing, on the claim form, to have their name, hometown and prize amount released. For smaller prizes, the winner's name, hometown and prize amount are public information under Nebraska law.
- Cash or yearly payments
- Powerball, Mega Millions and Lotto America jackpot winners have up to 60 days after becoming entitled to the prize to choose one cash payment instead of 30 yearly payments. Once made, the choice is final.
- Group wins
- A group sharing a prize names one member to claim it, who is paid the prize and has the tax withheld. The group can file IRS Form 5754 with the lottery so each member is taxed on their own share. A company or other legal entity can claim under its federal employer identification number.
- Free tickets
- A free ticket prize cashed at a retailer prints a free Quick Pick for the next drawing. Claimed at a claim center, the Lincoln office or by mail, it may be paid as a free Quick Pick, a coupon for one, or a warrant for its cash value.
