More Claim Rules
- Sign your ticket
- A North Dakota Lottery ticket belongs to whoever holds it until it's signed, and then to the person whose signature is on the back. Sign it as soon as you buy it: the lottery isn't responsible for lost or stolen tickets, and a retailer asks for proof of identity before paying on a signed one.
- Claim deadline
- Prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing, and a ticket sent to the lottery must reach it by then. If the 180th day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or state holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.
- Prizes won online
- Prizes under $600 on Pick & Click plays, bought online in the Players Club app or website, go straight into your Players Club wallet. For $600 or more, the lottery contacts you by email and phone, and you complete the Pick & Click Prize Claim Form and email, mail or bring it to the lottery within 180 days of the drawing.
- Debts owed to the state
- Before paying a prize of $600 or more, the lottery checks for overdue debts owed to or collected through North Dakota state agencies, child support first, and pays them out of the prize. You're paid the rest, and you can dispute the setoff in writing within 30 days of being told.
- Your name
- North Dakota law keeps a winner's name and other personal information confidential unless the winner agrees in writing to release it, which the claim form asks. The amount won and the winner's city and state aren't treated as personal information.
- Group wins
- A group sharing a prize claims it from the lottery, in person or by mail, with each member completing a Prize Claim - Shared Prizes form and showing a government-issued photo ID. One member signs the ticket, the group completes one Prize Sharing Agreement, and a member who isn't there completes a notarized Prize Sharing Agreement Addendum. Each share of $600 or more is paid by its own check; instead, the group can name one member to be paid and file IRS Form 5754.
- Cash or yearly payments
- Powerball, Mega Millions and Lotto America jackpot winners are paid in 30 yearly payments unless they choose one cash payment within 60 days of claiming the prize. A winner who chose yearly payments can still switch to cash within those 60 days; after that, the choice is final.
- Yearly payments
- If a Powerball, Mega Millions or Lotto America jackpot winner dies before every yearly payment is made, the winner's estate can ask for the rest to be paid at once, which the game's group of lotteries may allow.
