More Claim Rules
- Debts owed to the state
- Before paying a prize of more than $600, the lottery checks for unpaid child support and back state taxes, and pays them out of the prize first.
- Your name
- Winners of a draw game prize of $1 million or more can ask to keep their name, contact details and likeness private. Ask the Lottery Director in writing, by email to anon@wvlottery.com, or in person at Headquarters. In a lottery pool, only members whose own share is $1 million or more can stay anonymous. Other winners are public and listed in the winner database on wvlottery.com.
- Prizes won online
- Prizes on tickets bought online with iPLAY are claimed online up to $24,999.99. Under $600 they go straight into your account; from $600.01, you're asked to claim online when you sign in. From $25,000, start the claim online, wait for instructions, usually 2 to 5 business days, then claim in person at Lottery Headquarters in Charleston.
- Super Casher
- The Super Casher at 750 Hollywood Drive in Charles Town, phone 800-795-7001, pays prizes up to $5,000.
- Cash or yearly payments
- Powerball and Mega Millions jackpot winners have 60 days from claiming to choose cash or yearly payments. Millionaire for Life top and second prize winners make a final choice between cash and yearly payments within 60 days of becoming entitled to the prize.
- Claiming by mail
- A mailed ticket must reach Lottery Headquarters within 180 days of the drawing: a postmark doesn't count. The lottery isn't responsible for lost or misdirected mail.
- Multi-draw tickets
- A winning multi-draw ticket with drawings left is paid, and you get an exchange ticket for the drawings left.
- Group wins
- A claim is entered in one person's name, so a group, family or club sharing a ticket names one person to claim it. Winners can say how a prize is shared when they claim it, with some restrictions.
