More Claim Rules
- Debts owed to the state
- Before paying a prize over $600, the Lottery checks for debts owed to the State of Washington, like child support, and takes them out of the prize first.
- Claiming by mail
- Sign the ticket, fill in its back and mail it to Lottery Headquarters, with a Winner Claim Form / Substitute W-9, signed in both places, for a prize of $601 or more. The ticket must arrive within the 180-day claim period: mailing it in time isn't enough, and the Lottery isn't responsible for tickets lost in the mail.
- Large prizes
- Prizes of $100,000 or more are claimed in person at a Lottery office: call the office ahead to make an appointment and ask what ID to bring. Jackpots over $100 million are claimed only at Lottery Headquarters in Olympia.
- Cash or yearly payments
- A Lotto, Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot winner has 60 days after claiming at a Lottery office to choose cash or yearly payments. Without a choice in that time, the prize is paid yearly. A Lotto winner's choice can't be changed later.
- Group wins
- The Lottery pays each prize to one person or one legal entity. A group that isn't a legal entity, like an office pool, names one person to claim it. A trust or company needs a federal employer identification number and governing papers the Lottery's director approves.
- Signing a ticket over
- An unsigned ticket belongs to whoever holds it, so sign yours. A signed ticket can be signed over to someone else, like a family member, with a notarized letter or the Lottery's Statement of Ticket Ownership Form. A ticket with more than one name on it needs a notarized statement giving it to one of them.
- Claiming through a trust
- Lottery records are public, so a winner's name, city and prize amount can be released. A prize can be claimed in the name of a trust or another legal entity, but the papers that form it can be released too, naming the people behind it.
- Tickets bought online
- Washington doesn't allow lottery sales over the internet or through courier services, and a ticket bought that way can't win a prize.
